Listen children, and you shall hear, of the bug that draws folks from far and near. This is the story of the Boll Weevil Monument in Enterprise, Alabama.
The monument has been a source of both pride and ridicule for the Weevil City since its dedication on Dec. 11, 1919. It has repeatedly made headlines in its long history, gaining the most attention when it fell victim to yet another act of vandalism in 1998 — this one seemingly destroying it for good. The incident got national attention in an episode of Comedy Central's The Daily Show.
But never fear, an exact replica still stands in the monument's old spot on Main Street, and the shattered original is in Enterprise's Depot Museum.
